Teens To Trails partners with Chewonki
Teens To Trails or “T3” is pleased to announce that we are again partnering with the Chewonki Foundation to offer a scholarship opportunity for two Wiscasset teens. Sara's Scholarship: Engaging Teens in the Outdoors was established in memory of Sara Leone who was lost to the Wiscasset community in her own sophomore year. Scholarship applications are due on January 17.
Sara was in love with the world. Her strong connection to the outdoors played an important role in the passionate and compassionate person that she became. Sara’s Scholarship was originally created with donations from Sara’s family and friends and is used to give other teens access to positive outdoor experiences that can change their lives. Last year’s Scholarship recipient, Maeve Carlson, told the Wiscasset High School sophomore class that this experience was one she would never forget and strongly encouraged the students to apply.
Sara's Scholarship will again allow one sophomore girl and one sophomore boy to participate in a 3-week Chewonki Teen Wilderness Trip next summer where they will learn about the natural world as they learn about themselves. “Recipients are able to choose from a variety of amazing outdoor adventures including sea kayaking, sailing, canoeing, or hiking the Appalachian Trail! We would love for the recipients to come from the Wiscasset area,” said Carol Leone, Sara’s mother and Founder of Teens To Trails.
This opportunity is made possible by a partnership between Teens To Trails and the Chewonki Foundation. This wilderness experience will be an extraordinary adventure in self-discovery, opening a whole new world to two teenagers — an opportunity they would not otherwise be able to afford. It is also our intent that this Scholarship spark student interest in the outdoors, provide student leadership for the local high school Outing Club, and encourage the growth of teen Outing Clubs across Maine.
To learn how to apply and hear from past recipients, go to the Teens To Trails website at www.teenstotrails.org. Donations to keep this Scholarship going for Wiscasset teens can be made online.
