Tea time
Dear Editor:
Last Saturday, 75 hearty souls and music lovers were treated to an afternoon of delights. The setting was the Bigelow Lab in East Boothbay. There was an abundance of warm sunshine through the glassed-in area, and gratitude that we were spared from the predicted snowfall. It was a fundraising benefit for the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, with the DaPonte String Quartet and an elegant tea.
We all know that volunteers make a huge difference in our lives and our community, and this event had legions of them. It was a collaborative effort. Special kudos to Caroline Roberts for making her idea come to life, and to Bonnie Ginger for making her vision of a real tea come true.
The cozy space was filled with small tables covered with sparkling white cloths, hand painted tea cups and china, valentine decorations, and centerpieces of spring flowers. We settled into our seats and waited for the performance.
After the concert began, we became aware of the exceptional acoustics in this intimate setting. The four musicians presented a varied program, with commentary on each piece. I have heard them play many times, but on this day they were exceptional.
When tea was served, we were astounded again. Library board members and high school students served us, explaining all of the offerings, one sample for each person at the table. China tea pots were filled and refilled. Volunteers had made the tea sandwiches, scones, desserts, and set up the space the day before.
People from away often ask, “What do you do all winter?” After spouting off a long list, this one will now go to the top. Those of us who were fortunate to attend this sold-out concert hope that there will be a repeat next year. Well done!
