Thanksgiving 'Turkey Talk' with BRES' 3rd grade
Last Wednesday, the Boothbay Register went to Boothbay Region Elementary School to talk about Thanksgiving, cooking a turkey, and being thankful. These conversations with the third grade students of Jessica Lessner and Skyler Davis were fun and quite interesting.
Popular favorite dishes served for Thanksgiving included the turkey, and in one case lobsters and biscuits, ham, chicken, chicken nuggets, cranberry sauce; followed by desserts of apple or pumpkin pie, and ice cream.
Most of the children said they had turkey as the main course. Other main courses included lobster and biscuits - Logan Cherry's family; ham, chicken, and for Aldyn Peters it's chicken nuggets (with ketchup and mustard) and cranberry sauce. Emmitt Blair looks forward to the turkey with cranberry sauce on the side and ice cream dessert - and it's the classic trio for him.
Charlie LeGree said his family shares their Thanksgiving meal with their dogs. "I like the corn on the cob and mashed potatoes with gravy. I give my dogs my leftovers. We have two, but we used to have 15." (Yep, 13 were puppies.)
Wyatt Carver said he goes out to dinner and then comes home for a second turkey dinner.
Aubrey Hamilton thought it was more like an hour to roast their bird served with mashed potatoes, corn and green beans. Roman James guessed about one, two hours.
Ethan Copeland likes Thanksgiving because he can spend time with his family. Responses about what they are most thankful for always included their families - and a bit more:
Arrayah Petersen said her stepdad's stuffing is the best - and it is her favorite part of the meal. When asked what was in the stuffing that made it so special, she told us that was a secret.
One mom's cooking really stood out. Aullie Teel told everyone how his mom makes the turkey. "First we take the chicken legs off and put cranberry sauce on them and put them back in (the oven). Somehow she sticks some bacon on the front (mouth) with two chocolate chips for eyes and puts it back in the oven. When it's done she makes the bacon start moving around ... then we put gravy on it.
They also discussed cooking times for turkey, with responses ranging from 10 to 30 to 75 minutes. Zoey Gray said, "I'm guessing 11-30 minutes." Arrayah Petersen said, "My grandmother cooks it and she's been cooking for a while so it only takes her 10-20 minutes."
Here's more about cooking the turkey: Sawyer Rice said it took his mom 10 minutes to cook it; Gabe Mayotte's mom can cook one up in 30 minutes and his favorite part of the meal is cranberry sauce. Other students agreed with his favorite part of the meal.
As the children shared their reasons for being thankful it became clear the youngsters pay attention to what's going on around them, and appreciate their families so very much.
