Takes issue with YMCA commentary
Dear Editor:
I take issue with the commentary in the February 13 Boothbay Register which scolded the newspaper for conducting a poll on their website. I have been reading all of the letters to the editor and listened to all the talk at the Y and around town.
The Y is a very significant entity in the Boothbay region and has been supported generously, both financially and through volunteerism. People are interested in what goes on at the Y.
Any personnel situation or problem should have been dealt with quickly and in an unbiased manner. It is the duty of the Y board to become aware of dissatisfaction within the membership and make a point of seeking out members' input. The board's handling of the present personnel matter has been questioned.
Mary Baudo has a strong sense of personal integrity. Why did a skilled professional who organized and created wellness programs, trips and events, was well liked and good at her job, initiate an uncharacteristic action that would bring about an upsetting change in her life? She made an investment in our community and bought a house in East Boothbay where she resides with her husband and young child.
There is a problem here not being addressed. By their uncompromising attitude and tardy response to questions by Y members, the board has created an embarrassing situation and confusion. Why haven't board members been out questioning membership and employees to get to the core of the problem. Was it personnel or personal?
Damage can't be reversed but we can hope to give the membership more insight into board decisions and board a better understanding of diplomatic management practice. In this case, when feelings are running high, being polite is not enough.
