Sunny weather for BRFGA tournament

The 10th annual Boothbay Region Fish & Game Association Saltwater Fishing Tournament was held this past Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9 and the sunny weather drew an almost even split of 35 adults and 36 juniors. The fishing for mackerel and pollock was very good, although striper fishing proved to be somewhat of a challenge.
The winning striper in the Adult Division was a 24.75-incher caught by young Mike Bobrowiecki, who received a check for $200. Kevin Stevens caught a 24.25-inch fish, good for second place and $100, and Ray Rubicam took third with a bass measuring 24 inches and received a check for $50. No bluefish were entered again this year.
The Junior Mackerel Division was hotly contested, with several dozen fish entered. When the dust settled, Johnny Gray had the largest, a whopping 14.75-incher, good for $50. Drew Stevens came in second, and Courtney Meader took third. Fourth went to Heather Crocker, and Tommy Gray rounded out the pack in fifth. Second through fifth place brought $10 cash each to the winners.
The Junior Pollock Division was won by Tyler Heil, who took home $50 cash. Matthew Ochs came in second with a fish good for $10, and Sam Heil took the third-place pollock, also good for $10. Elsa Heil and Sam Ochs came in fourth and fifth respectively, and each took home $10 cash.
Area businesses responded with a number of terrific door prizes, including $100 cash from First Federal Savings & Loan Association, a $25 Visa gift card from The First, a certificate for dinner for two at Spruce Point Inn, rod and reel outfits from Oak Street Outdoors, and rod and reel outfits from the Fish & Game Association. Elsa Heil won the Junior Grand Prize of a brand-new bicycle, courtesy of Stephen Rubicam Photography and Shark Six Charters.
Tournament organizer would like to extend their appreciation to Todd and Kim Simmons of the Boothbay Lobster Wharf for hosting the weigh-ins on both Saturday and Sunday, to Doug and Elise Roberts of Oak Street Outdoors for handling the registrations, and to Grover’s Hardware and the YMCA for displaying the Junior Grand Prize bicycle in the days leading up to the tournament.
Proceeds from the popular event benefit the Fish & Game Association’s Life Skills Scholarship Fund as well as many other Association programs.
