Success in tennis
Hopefully by the time you read this we will no longer feel like the state of Maine had become a tropical desert. The weather man did decide to cool us off a bit over the weekend and now it seems like we can go back to enjoying our summer activities without feeling like we were being cooked alive.
Many residents dealt with our hot weather by making sure they took advantage of the cool ocean water. The beach and diving float got lots of use.
Some of our younger residents were enterprising enough to take advantage of the overbearing heat and set up a lemonade stand on Juniper Point. I would guess that business was really good during the heat wave.
Our congratulations to Peter Edwards and Beverly Simmons who look forward to their wedding on July 28. They are thrilled to have most of their families joining them, and Peter is particularly looking forward to his grandson, Sam (Christina's child) experiencing his first visit to Boothbay Harbor at age 5 months.
Christina and her husband live in Tahoe, Calif., and their visits are unfortunately not as frequent as everyone would like.
The Barnes household welcomed Jim and Maxie Marks, Stanford university friends and neighbors, last week for their first visit to our area. We made sure they had a chance to enjoy as much of our "home away from home" as possible during their short stay.
That included visits to the aquarium, the Botanical Gardens, visits and dinners with the other "Stanford Mainiacs" that spend summers in our area and several opportunities to enjoy our local treats of lobsters and clams.
On the tennis side of things, another successful week was in the books. It was a hot week, but that did not deter participation at the courts. Our players drilled hard, and worked on their games while also learning the importance of hydration and nutritional sustenance. Working on the 10 minute warm-up, our hope is to teach our Juggernauts to "win the warm-up"!
Stroke production and tactics did not go amiss along with serve and return and court coverage when in distress. When all was said and done, the coaches are most happy seeing those young stars in the making come out early to warm up on the courts, come to a second clinic, or come down and work on their games outside of their normal class. Keep up the work Juggernauts! Well done, well done.
Movie night was again a great success. Attendance has doubled, as the new flat screen, incredible movie selection through Wii U, endless board games with badminton and teatherball, and lastly a brand new ping pong table with paddles has the children smiling from ear to ear.
Comments like "Whoa dude," "Where did this come from?" "Awesome," and everything is "Bigger in Texas" can be heard echoing around the point. These comments and the genuine genuine well-being of generations of JPVIS youth to come, is what drove Mr. John Gillies to make these generous gifts possible. His hands on approach is even more telling as you can see him down at the community house in the morning, dropping new goodies off and putting together a ping pong table with his family. Seeing it through from start to finish is in his nature and Juniper Point could not have asked for a more generous donor and contributor to what has made this great community great for so many years. Thank you Mr. John Gillies from all of us, as many have wished this message to reach you in person.
Please remember that this Saturday, July 27, is the date of our annual meeting at the Community House. Coffee at 9 a.m. and meeting at 9:30 a.m. Hopefully by now everyone has sent in their reservations for our gala 100th year celebration, "Dancing Through the Decades" to take place this Saturday. Contact Kathy Wilkinson if you have any questions. On August 1 at 7 p.m., the program by Holly and Art Barnes, "From Berlin to the Beatles" will take place at the Community House.
With all the activities on the calendar for this next week no residents will have the opportunity to be bored. I do still send out a plea to all residents to send me your news and activities. Please remember no news is still not good news.
