Students hear about different cultures
Southport Central School students learned a lot about several countries on Friday, March 31, hearing firsthand accounts from people who were either born in a different country or spent a good deal of time there.
A Cultural Fair Day, where students learned and celebrated the cultures of six countries, was held from morning into the afternoon as students listened to presentations – complete with visual aids – from area volunteers. The event was planned by Meredith Roberts Fowlie, SCS guidance teacher, with help from other staff members. After the presentations, the students participated in fun activities.
Talking via Skype from Portland to start the presentations was an acquaintance of the Fowlie family, a Mr. Alagnon, who was born in Togo, Africa. Following in succession were: Frau Baade of Edgecomb, who talked about her native Germany; Chyanne Rogers and Erica Eames, Boothbay Region High School French students who talked about France while filling in for BRHS French teacher Madame Gorey who couldn’t attend; Mohamed Osman, who talked about his native Egypt; Adrienne Warren, who talked about her two years in Wales while in the U.S. Navy; and Barb House, who spoke about Haiti, where she and her husband Chuck adopted a son in the 1990s and have been back several times to supply aid to the poverty-stricken country.
Each of the speakers talked about their respective country’s landscape, buildings, schools, food, climate, what the country is best known for and more. The presentations were about 20 minutes long and maps of each country were displayed on a screen behind the speakers. Students asked questions while the talks were presented and later studied maps of the seven continents, drew flags of various countries and listened to more information from their teachers about different cultures.
