St. Andrews Auxiliary honors volunteers at annual luncheon

For St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary, it’s all about the numbers.
At the group’s June 4 annual luncheon, held this year at Fisherman’s Wharf, the auxiliary honored 11 volunteers and recognized a staggering 64 members who volunteered a total of 10,800 hours last year. Over 7,000 of those hours were worked in the St. Andrews Auxiliary Thrift Shop.
This year’s honorees were Kathy Barter, Grace Calhoun, Betty Goulette, Audrey Kelly, Ellen Memory, Mary Merrill, Peggy Pinkham, Holly Smith, Penny Thimuth, Maxine Tourtillotte and Barbara Williams.
Speakers were Dr. Mark Fourre, chief medical officer of Lincoln County Healthcare, and Kathy Bean, executive director of Miles and St. Andrews Home Health and Hospice.
Fourre and Bean spoke about the new Community Paramedicine program, where paramedics make regular visits to patients who are frequently at the ER. They perform routine work such as blood glucose testing or help with medications. According to James Donovan, Lincoln County Healthcare president and CEO, these patients account for around half of all ER visits.
They will also do regular checks on patients with diabetes, COPD and congestive heart failure, and also patients recently discharged from hospitals.
Community Paramedicine will be free to patients, and coordinate with both the Boothbay Region District Nurse and Home Care programs. The project is a joint effort between Lincoln County Healthcare, Central Lincoln County Ambulance, Boothbay Region Ambulance Service and the Waldoboro EMS.
Auxiliary President Carol Zalucky welcomed the Auxiliary's newest member, Carole Sharkey, and thanked all the volunteers for their hard work this year. She also stressed after the event that the auxiliary is in great needs of new members and volunteers, who work at St. Andrews Village (especially in the Gregory Wing), at the Family Care Center, and at the Auxiliary Thrift Shop.
Membership forms can be gotten from Leslie Cook, the volunteer chair, or at the Auxiliary Thrift Shop. To reach Cook, call 207-633-7609 or email cook2401@roadrunner.com.
