Sports are sports

The area’s school sports plans Bill Pearson reports on this week make sense given the other school decisions at the state and local levels. If Wiscasset and Boothbay Region schools are seeing fit to have youth back together learning, with precautions, and sports officials can cast and execute precautions that keep youth safe from giving or getting the virus also, parents should be able to consider putting them in the programs, if they see fit.

This year’s twists – high school championships being open to all the teams instead of record-driven, and middle schoolers going intramural and building their skills, get kids many or even all the health benefits and much of the camaraderie and more that help make school sports worthwhile, and worth spending money on, in any season.

Kudos to our school sports leaders for negotiating this uncertain time and holding out for the best information before making and possibly breaking announced plans.

The pandemic has put a question mark on athletics right through to the pros, so we will have to see how it goes, just like in the classroom. The local sports planning sounds thoughtful, and leaves the final call where it should be, with families.
