Southport selectmen decide not to seek 24 U.S. flags for nation’s 250th
The Galen Cole Family Foundation is looking to fill Maine streets with American flags to celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary next year. The foundation is accepting applications from municipalities to participate in the semi-quincentennial. The gift is a kit of 24 American flags.
But Southport won't be one of them. On Oct. 1, selectmen decided against applying because their utility poles were already packed with patriotic symbolism. Selectman Gerry Gamage estimated local utility poles already had 175 American Legion banners.
"We really didn't know if we have room for them. There are 175 veteran banners now, with more on the way," he said.
In other action, resident Gene Eves had concerns about the Hendricks Head Beach Project plans. Southport is using a state grant for building up a portion of road near Eves' property to place a new culvert. "His concern is the new culvert is larger, resulting in more saltwater intrusion onto his property," Gamage said.
Selectmen meet next at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8 in the town hall.
