Southport Column: Some events to consider joining
The Southport Memorial Library will be open Tuesday 9-4, Thursday 9-4 and 6-8, and Saturday 9-4. New books keep arriving, and there are plenty others as well, something for all your wants and needs. While book lending is the core mission, there are many other services and events offered. There is WiFi, computers are available for use, printer and scanner jobs can be taken care of as well. The used bookstore located upstairs is getting additional volumes all the time, and proceeds support the library. There are art shows; currently a group of nine plein air painters are exhibiting and some of their chosen scenes are familiar to many of us here on Southport. Museum passes are available, there have been several venues added, come in and see the new list of places you can visit. There is also coffee “hour” it tends to go much longer than an hour, but start time is generally 10ish. Lively conversation, free coffee and a sweet treat, all are welcome, the more the merrier. Tech Time With Tarsha is often available on Tuesdays from 10 to 11, but you might want to call to make sure she has been able to be there. Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 there are a variety of events. This week, on the 9th, games will continue. Bring one, use one of the many available, bring yourself, a friend, the family, and take a seat at one of the tables, enjoy a few snacks and competition. You can find this and more at 1032 Hendricks Hill Road, call if you would like further information: 207-633-2741.
Tacos With Friends, at the Southport General Store, will be on Tuesday, April 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. In addition to the taco bar, chips and salsa, you can learn Spanish, the reviews have been five-star, $15 will get you a good dinner and a lot of fun. If you can’t stay, To Go is available.
Also at the store, on Wednesday, April 8, from 2 to 4, you can join the Community Knitting Group. Pleasant talk accompanies the clicking of the needles, such a nice way to spend some time. They are quite accomplished, but they are also willing to help you get started if you are a complete beginner.
Next week, Friday, April 17, 5-7 p.m., will be the Winter Supper Series. It will be Italian Night and will also feature a cookbook and recipe swap as well as wine tasting. The cost is $25/person and features a comforting, community style buffet with four different options. Mark it on your calendar as a cozy evening celebrating food and community.
Additionally next week the Southport Selectboard has invited residents, property owners, and interested members of the public to attend a status update meeting on the Hendricks Head Restoration Project on Wednesday, April 15, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the Southport Town Office, it should be most informative.
On Friday of this week, Robinson’s Wharf will feature live music from 5 to 8 p.m. from All That Matters, so, if you need a good dose of tunes, want to sing along, dance a little, or just enjoy good food and good company it is the place to be. Their hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11:30-8.
That brings us to the end of happenings, remember that if you have events or information that you would like included in the column, drop them at the store in the mailbox, call, or email, there are many ways to find me.
The skies have cleared, gone is the persistent rain and drizzle, we do however still need a substantial amount of that to get us out of the drought conditions brought on by last summer and falls long dry and hot spell, so I am always grateful for the precipitation. An array of colors are starting to fill yards and gardens, yellows, purples, whites, those hardy early bloomers, I am fond of the crocus that care not at all for the boundaries of a bed. They pop up through the grass, any crack, wherever suits them, and then wait for the sun before opening their petals, soaking in the light and warmth, it is hard to see them and feel a sense of well-being.
Have a good week, and May Peace Be With You All.
