Southport Column: Road work continues and anniversaries celebrated
Look elsewhere in this paper for an article about the 42nd Parallel Film company working on the island last week to produce a film about Rachel Carson for the PBS show "The American Experience," to be shown in the fall of 2016. What fun it will be to see our lovely island and to hear about one of our famous residents on national television.
Work on the east side of the island continues to lay water pipe from Sawyers Pond Road to the now finished, concrete water tower above the pond. Pipe will also be laid to Cross Road and connected to the existing "winter" pipe traversing that road. One way traffic and blasting has been carefully handled along Route 238 this week.
I hear that the culvert at Love's Cove will be completed at the end of this week. If so, traffic on the west side of the island will flow freely again.
Congratulations to three couples I know who recently have celebrated wedding anniversaries. Dan and Barb Harle celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by spending a week on Martha's Vineyard. Daughter Danielle and her husband Jeff from Arlington, Texas, and daughter Heather and her husband Bill, with their sons, Liam and Sam, from Cumberland, Rhode Island, helped make wonderful memories filled with adventures and activities.
Leal and Will Brinegar as well as Holly and Phil Smith have also celebrated their anniversaries recently.
Peg and Bill Helming have sold their home in Massachusetts and will be moving to their summer home on Southport on Oct. 28, a big job as their Massachusetts home is filled with the debris and precious possessions of six lives, mother, dad, and four sons. We will be delighted to have Dr. Peg and Bill here full time and the boys when they come.
About 60 people filled the Southport Yacht Club (SYC) Saturday evening for the Southport Island Association and the SYC walk and potluck supper. A handful of stalwart walkers strolled to Pratts Island beach and back, after which all enjoyed good food and fellowship.
