Soap in the making
The art and science of making goat milk soap will be the topic of the March 12 meeting of the Boothbay Region Garden Club. Amy Hoinsky, a noted Southport soap maker, will demonstrate the craft.
Amy grew up in Mystic, Conn. where she attended technical schools and acquired her quest for learning and researching new things. She met her husband in a bakery in Boston while working and learning the skills of cake baking and decorating. The idea of living on an island intrigued her, hence their move to Southport. Their mini farm of goats and chickens grew out of the desire to make goat’s milk soap which has curing properties for skin problems. Her soaps are made from frozen goat milk, all organic and natural oils and scents, her favorite being “Avocado Mango Butter.” Some of her other interests include computer design, crocheting, sewing, baking and needle-felting. A variety of her soaps will be available at the meeting.
All members and interested guests are encouraged to attend this informative meeting. The meeting starts at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 at St. Columba’s Church on Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor.
