Seahawks rise against the Phoenix
A grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning sealed the deal for the Boothbay baseball team in their 4-2 win over Spruce Mountain May 20.
The home team had a rocky start as Spruce Mountain scored a run in the third and fourth innings. Then, with the bases loaded at the bottom of the fifth, Maddox Cusumano blasted a home run.
“He launched one over center field fence, just pretty much as deep as you can,” said coach Ed Crocker.
Liam Jacobs, Sam Makowitz, and Les White scored runs on the hit.
Jacobs and Aidric Canada pitched for the Seahawks. Combined, they struck out 12 players and allowed three walks and two earned runs. Boothbay struck out once, walked eight times and had four earned runs. Spruce Mountain had three errors and Boothbay had none.
“One consistent thing that we've had all year is, is really good pitching between (Jacobs) and the rest of the guys,” Crocker said. "Now that we've — knock on wood — cleaned up our defense a little bit, every game has been very competitive.”
