Seahawks complete highly successful season

Sun, 06/09/2024 - 10:15am

The 2024 Boothbay Region High School boys tennis season ended with a Class C South semifinal tournament loss to Waynflete of Portland but coach Mark Gorey had high praise for his team for the match and season.

“Regarding the semifinal match against Waynflete, the 5-0 score only scratches the surface of the whole story,” said Gorey via email. “Our #1 doubles team of Andrew Fowlie and Neal Baldwin won their first set and, after coming from behind early in the second, came very close to winning, losing 5-7. Our second doubles team of Cole Hyson and Harry Hinckley were very much in the first set, eventually losing it 4 - 6.

“Waynflete's coach Jeff Madore complimented our players for their good sportsmanship, and for creating a positive match environment overall.

“Each of our players called upon his personal store of ‘moxie’ to compete against Waynflete, who are in Class C based on their enrollment numbers, but who play the likes of Greely, Cape Elizabeth, and Yarmouth in their regular season. Mr. (Allan) Crocker and I are having discussions about how next year we could build in two additional matches against non-Mountain Valley Conference teams, to benefit from more competition during the regular season; in this way, we would have a better chance of winning against an MCI or Waynflete or North Yarmouth Academy, all of whom we could face in the state Class C South team tournament.”

2024 marked the second straight year that the Seahawks finished at the top of the Class C South Heal point standings and that the team has won back-to-back MVC championships. It was also the first year Gorey has coached an undefeated team during the regular season.

“I am extremely proud of this team!” said Gorey.
