Richard “Dick” Luce, 93, died peacefully on Jan. 6, 2020 at Diversicare of Council Grove, Kansas.

Dick was born to Shirley Otto Luce and Beatrice Luce on June 22, 1926 in Lansing, Michigan, where he grew up. Shirley was a popular name for the family as Dick’s Dad was named Shirley, Dick’s middle name was Shirley, and he then found the love of his life, Shirley Harrington.

Dick graduated from General Motors Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering and worked for General Motors in Michigan. He married Shirley on June 18, 1949 and they made their home on Cass Lake in Michigan before being transferred to the GM plant in Marion, Indiana where they raised their two sons and resided until Dick retired.

They then made their dream move to Boothbay Harbor, Maine where they lived on Barters Island and continued Dick’s love of sailing, learning how to sail on the ocean versus Michigan and Indiana lakes. Dick was a member of the Coast Guard Power Squadron and taught many classes in boating and navigation. He had a lifetime hobby of photography and was known by family and friends for his many albums of beautiful pictures. Dick and Shirley became avid supporters of the Carousel Dinner Theater and loved sharing their home with the many actors and actresses who participated in the summer theater program in Boothbay. These young adults became lifelong friends of the family.

Upon Shirley’s passing Dick moved to Council Grove, Kansas to be closer to his youngest son, Mike, and his wife Ann. He loved his home on Council Grove Lake where he continued his love of boating. Dick eventually moved to Council Grove Assisted Living and then to Diversicare, receiving wonderful care at both facilities.

Dick was predeceased by his wife, Shirley.

Survivors include: sister, Donna McCaig of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; sons, Rick Luce (wife Sally) of Arvada, Colorado, Mike Luce (wife Ann) of Council Grove; grandchildren, Allison Jarrett and partner John Cook of Arvada, Phillip Luce (wife Eliza) of Westminster, Colorado and Stephanie Luce of Denver; great-grandchildren, Donovan Jarrett and James Luce; sister-in-law, Valerie Burke of New Providence, New Jersey; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial contributions can be made to Care and Share of Council Grove, Kansas, and sent to Mike and Ann Luce, 620 Columbia Street, Council Grove, KS66846.

No services are planned. Dick’s request was to be cremated and to have his ashes placed in the ocean in Maine where Shirley’s ashes were spread, followed by a family dinner of lobster at the Lobsterman’s Co-op. Our family will fulfill Dad’s request at a later date.
