Remembering Junior
Dear Editor:
I and my former neighbors at Bay Landing noted with regret the passing of our good friend and neighbor, Wallace “Junior” Barter.
There never was a more friendly and helpful person.
There was never a snowstorm that did not find him out cleaning off cars. The winter we didn't have much snow he complained that he wasn't getting enough exercise. His employment background, compassion and intelligence enabled him to be sensitive and helpful to those in need.
“Wallie” was always cheerful even if he was depressed or discouraged, and God know he could have been; he never showed it. Although vocally handicapped, he often took part in group discussions. He attended most meetings and really enjoyed the interaction and refreshments.
After a serious health crisis, he returned from Togus, after signing himself out. “They're not keeping me another day,” he said and the next morning found him at Circle K with his coffee and doughnuts.
Besides his other qualities, Wallie was a proud, patriotic veteran. He took it upon himself, as long as he was able, to take care of our flag at Bay Landing. Weather permitting, he put it up every morning and down every night.
Life threw him many challenges but they never got the best of him. There are few people I admired more.
