Rebuilding Together: Living with dignity

Volunteers were out in force Saturday, May 5 spreading goodwill and helping neighbors whose homes needed a little sprucing up.
Rebuilding Together Lincoln County has been making both the recipients of the hard work, and the workers offering their services, happy and thankful, for over 16 years.
Original member Chip Griffin describes the organization’s goal: “(It's) to preserve and revitalize houses and our community, assuring that low-income homeowners live in warmth, safety and independence.”
Vic Taylor has been giving his time and expert advice to the group for 12 years. He's thankful he gets to do it. “Living with dignity is an important part of why we do this. There’s warmth and security provided, but dignity is the most important thing.”
Coffee and donut holes Hannaford donated served as sustenance for the workers at the start of the day, when around 60 people gathered to get their marching orders and split up into teams. Volunteer Ann Sutter was manning that table keeping the coffee hot and the platters of donut holes bottomless.
While work began on projects, a group of 10 women and one man were at Stephanie Hawke’s house preparing lunch, much of which Hannaford also donated. Lunch was pulled pork sandwiches, pasta salad, cole slaw and a variety of desserts, all fit for hard workers out putting smiles on grateful homeowners’ faces.
One group worked on a house near the library on Southport. Three of those volunteers have helped with Rebuilding Together since its inception.
