Pumpkin therapy

When the world around us feels chaotic it can be comforting to fall back on our treasured traditions. Recently the Garden Therapy team from the Boothbay Region Garden Club met at St. Andrews Village, as they do every year at this time, to guide the residents of the Gregory Wing and Safe Havens through the decorating of pumpkins for Halloween. Forty-five spunky little pumpkin faces later, October team leader, Nan Jackson, waxing poetic, offered the following children’s rhyme:

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate. The first one said, "Oh my it's late!”   The second one said, "There are witches in the air." The third one said, "But we don't care." The fourth one said, "Let's run, let's run!" The fifth one said, "Isn't Halloween fun?" Then Woooooo went the wind and out went the lights. And five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

Garden therapy is one of the most popular ongoing activities of BRGC. The successful outcome of every monthly event is always plainly visible on the faces of those who participate in the chosen and carefully designed creative activity, be they a resident or volunteer.

Join the garden club and become a member or coordinator of the garden therapy team. Volunteering is fun and rewarding! Contact Sandra Abernathy (633-0392) or Alice Schambra (633- 7162) for more information.
