Post-election, high school basketball and more

The political season is over … or is it? We can expect President Trump to continue his denial of the results but let’s hope the mainstream media doesn’t beat his drum on every tweet or press conference. We hope the news outlets report on the news … like the results of any recounts or facts concerning the vote, rather than repeating Trump’s claims. We also hope that the mainstream media continues on its path to reporting on COVID-19 – its impact on the country and any possible vaccines – as well as stories on economic recovery and how President-elect Joseph Biden’s policies are to be implemented and when. His pledge to put together a pandemic team is welcome news.

With the recent rapid rise in the number of COVID-19 cases throughout the country, we find it hard to believe that a high school basketball season is going to happen. Having played and coached the game, close contact is part of the game. We feel sorry for the seniors who have been looking forward to completing their careers but we also want them to stay safe and to be able to graduate. If football was postponed, how do the authorities think that basketball can be played safer?

Support your local businesses during the upcoming Early Bird sales – Nov. 14 in Wiscasset and Nov. 21 in Boothbay Harbor. It is just another way of helping the economy during this pandemic. But remember to stay safe by wearing a mask and remaining socially distanced.

Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts!
