Nothing will be done to fix gun violence
Dear Editor:
After thinking about the Florida shooting for a week, I have reached a personal conclusion that this society, with its cultural gun mentality, has reached the point that, as a society, we love our guns more than our children – or any other human being for that matter.
This conclusion is not an anti-gun comment as most of us are guilty, in my opinion, of this state of affairs – the pro-gun people for thinking that more guns and fortification of schools, churches and all public institutions and public spaces will somehow resolve the issue; the anti-gun crowd for decrying the now unending mass shootings, demanding stricter laws, banning, etc. for a few weeks.
The NRA knows that each tragic incident will blow over after the news cycle – and they are right. The anti-gun crowd will, after a few days, wrap themselves in moral dressing thinking they have once again made their point and then proceed to re-elect political representatives that rely (in many cases, must rely) on the well organized pro-gun lobby money knowing full well that the “do-gooders” will not act at the ballot box in a manner that remotely reflects their inch deep and mile wide moral indignation about guns.
Of course, there are those on both sides that recognize the need for a societal addressing of the gun violence situation, but the vast majority on both sides will continue to sit on their respective rear ends confident in their moral superiority, do nothing (one side because they do not have to and the other because in the end they will do nothing).
As Trump would say – “too bad, so sad.”
