Nell Anthony, scholar-athlete
Nell Anthony has always gravitated to the outdoors and sports. The 2014 top 10 graduating senior at Boothbay Region High School surfs, has volunteered at an ice rink, and spent half her sophomore year in the Coastal Studies for Girls’ semester school in Freeport. In college, she hopes to take up stand-up paddle board racing.
The daughter of Marianne and Kevin Anthony of Boothbay plans to study outdoor leadership and psychology at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. Her experience in the coastal studies program sparked an interest in outdoor leadership.
The National Honor Society member hopes to spend one of her college semesters abroad; and in her first year after college, she wants to serve in the Peace Corps as her mother did.
Some of Anthony’s best times in high school have involved her extensive participation in sports. “It’s just great to be a part of a team,” she said.
Anthony’s sports accomplishments include a conference honorable mention in varsity soccer her freshman year; a most-improved award in women’s varsity Nordic skiing; a coach’s award in women’s varsity skiing her sophomore year; and taking part in track and field all four years.
Anthony, class secretary for four years and a four-year member of the school’s symphonic band, said high school has helped her develop qualities that will be useful going forward.
A winner of a College of the Atlantic book award, Anthony said she has learned to work hard and not give up. “It's been a great time to figure out who I am and what I want from the world.
“I''m really excited to get out there and meet new people, and just have new experiences.”
