Need help? CRC’s Community Navigator Program has the answers
Need assistance and not sure where to go? The Community Resource Council (CRC)’s Community Navigator Program (CNP) is there to lend a hand. CNP is a confidential service that helps residents from Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport and Edgecomb seek referrals for everything from housing and mental health assistance to career training.
“One of the things that is special about this position is that I have the time to really make sure that there's follow through with folks and help them step by step, if necessary,” said Hannah Corkum, CNP director. This differs from other programs whose assistance often leaves people on their own after the initial referral, she says.
The CNP is also unique due to its grant and donation-based funding, which allows them flexibility with the range of services they offer. While they do have guidelines for people looking for economic support, CNP is needs-based so financial background is not an automatic disqualifier for aid.
“The crux of what we're trying to do is be able to provide people who typically fall through the cracks, or are just over that poverty line, (with) the support that they need. (We are) filling that gap,” said Corkum. Last year, CNP assisted 256 families.
The most common issue people present with is a lack of housing. Due to the community’s small size, the facilities that offer low-income housing are scarce and already have waiting lists 2 or 3 years long. The CNP tries to maintain good relationships with local landlords and other entities, but housing opportunities have diminished over the years. This has required that they widen their search to outside the region.
“In some cases, that will mean people that have lived here all their lives are looking at moving away from their supports and their family.”
However, the CNP pursues different avenues to try and alleviate this issue, whether it's looking into family member support, or subsidizing other expenses. Whatever the issue is, the program is ready to assist.
“Anybody can utilize this service. There's no judgment. Just come through the door.” CNP's office is located on the LincolnHealth Campus: 6 Saint Andrews Lane Ste 230, Boothbay Harbor.
