Myron Hahn: Ship-bound
Myron Hahn is not an easy person to track down.
When the 17-year-old Boothbay Region High School senior isn't in class or in the workshop, he can be found volunteering for his hometown Boothbay Fire Department.
Or, he can be found at Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, readying his 420 for the water, as part of the club team.
Or, working with EM Woods in Boothbay.
In other words, Hahn is a busy man.
But, if he had his way, he'd be out on the water all the time.
Starting next year, Hahn, the son of Dale Hahn and Michelle Davis, will pursue that goal full-time when he attends Maine Maritime Academy in Castine to earn his degree in marine engineering operations.
He said his ultimate goal is to be aboard a ship (“a ship,” he said, widening his hands out in front of him, “not a boat”) and out to sea for long periods of time.
“My goal is to be on a ship as an engineer; keeping everything running,” Hahn said.
While he can't pinpoint the first moment his passion for the water began, he can identify when it intensified.
“I've always liked the water,” he said. “I used to go out on my father's boat. But Ocean Classroom was the best thing I've ever done.
“I would do it again in a heart beat.”
Hahn spent a good portion of his 2013 spring semester on a boat, sailing more than 5,000 nautical miles, visiting a dozen countries and 45 ports aboard the schooner Harvey Gamage.
In addition to the school keeping its shop program going, the induction of the sailing team at the yacht club, and his semester at sea, Hahn said he will have a number of happy memories from his time at Boothbay Region High School.
But soon, the easiest place to find Hahn will be on the water.
“I think I'm ready to leave Boothbay,” he said.
