“Silly, Spooky, Scary” is not only the series title for former Edgecomb pastor Steve Burt’s new trilogy, released Oct. 5, it also describes the 30 stories in the three collections for grades 4-8, “Silly, Spooky, Scary #1,” “Silly, Spooky, Scary #2,” and “Silly, Spooky, Scary #3.”
Some of the tales are funny, like “The Caretaker," about an apprentice taking over his retiring uncle’s job at an Augusta felons’ cemetery. Others, like the New Harbor disaster about junior highs and their science teacher in a Pemaquid graveyard on Halloween, are fun-spooky but not terrifying. But then there’s “The Mason’s Leech,” about a dog that comes back to life, and it’s very creepy. “Lighthouse Moths” is about disembodied spirits circling inside the Pemaquid Lighthouse.
The three covers feature dark or dimly lit haunted houses and the stories are fun to read alone or aloud.
Burt is also the author of the Maine Allagash Gargouilles thrillers for adults and older teens. “The Bookseller’s Daughter,” “Protect the Queen,” and “Challenge the King” are set around Wells, Kennebunk, and York. Rev. Burt also penned the award-winning FreeKs teens-with-powers series: “FreeK Camp,” “FreeK Show,” and “FreeK Week.”
