Happy Thanksgiving dear library patrons! We hope you’re all enjoying heaping seconds of your favorite Thanksgiving dish, way too much dessert, and a good afternoon snooze with a relaxing book.

For many of us, Thanksgiving is really about family: enjoying them, avoiding them, or some combination of the two.

No matter how you feel about family, in general or your own, it’s an important topic for most of us. That’s why we’ve chosen Re-imagining the American Family for the subject of 2020’s Let’s Talk About It, a book club series sponsored by the Maine Humanities Council.

The book club will meet on the first Saturday of each month beginning in February and running through June. As she has for the last two years, Larissa Vigue Picard of the Pejepscot Historical Society will moderate the discussion.

The Maine Humanities Council explains that the books in this series are chosen to “attempt to expand, complicate, and challenge our vision of what constitutes the ‘American family.’

“This series exposes readers to a wide range of experiences and perspectives, with the goal of broadening our conceptions of individual and family identities. We will also broaden our conception of the memoir genre by exploring traditional long-form writing alongside graphic and poetic self-representations.”

February’s title will be “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance, and will be available for checkout at BHML beginning in December.

Subsequent titles are: “Fun Home” by Alison Bechdel; “Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?” by Roz Chast; “What the Living Do,” by Marie Howe; and “Brothers and Keepers” by John Edgar Wideman.

We hope you’ll join us for great reads and great discussions. Maybe we’ll even serve some pumpkin pie to keep us all in the family spirit.

Don’t forget! The library will be closed Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29.
