July Diabetes Support Group focuses on edema
MaineHealth Lincoln Hospital invites individuals living with diabetes and their families to join a free Diabetes Support Group, meeting every other month on the fourth Thursday.
The next meeting, Thursday, July 24, from 1 to 2 p.m., will be at a new location: the Webster Van Winkle Building, 79 Schooner Street, Damariscotta.
Occupational Therapist Leah Taylor will lead a group discussion focusing on the connections between diabetes and edema of the lower extremities, including causes, early detection and prevention. Whether they’re living with diabetes or caring for someone who is, participants will learn practical tips to help prevent complications and improve quality of life. Topics include understanding swelling, how lymphedema differs, why people with diabetes may be at risk, and strategies for daily care and prevention.
The Diabetes Support Group is free, and refreshments will be provided. Attendees can join in person or online via Zoom. Pre-registration is required. To register, call 207-563-4442 or 207-563-4126. An email address is required for those attending virtually.
MaineHealth Lincoln Hospital also offers expert diabetes education and medical nutrition services at its Damariscotta and Boothbay Harbor campuses. Services include one-on-one and group education led by registered nurse diabetes educators and registered dietitians to help individuals better manage their diabetes and improve overall health.
