John M. King, 86, of Ocean Point passed away on Sept. 3, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia. He was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Feb. 4, 1940, the son of Linn A. and Mary A. (Little) King. 

John spent his early years in New Castle, New Hampshire, before moving with his family to the Territory of Hawaii as a teenager. He attended Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, where he excelled academically. 

John showed an entrepreneurial spirit from an early age. As a young man, he and his younger brother, Frank, started several small service businesses together—an early indication of the initiative and independence that would remain part of John's character throughout his life. 

During his professional career, John worked for Wang Laboratories as an outstanding computer programmer.  He was well-versed in legacy computer languages.  Beyond his work, he believed in helping others and was a valued member of the Woodchucks, an organization devoted to providing firewood to low-income families so they could keep their homes warm during the cold winter months. His involvement with the Woodchucks reflected his willingness to give his time and energy to those in need. 

John had a special love for dogs and a lifelong appreciation for show music. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and valued the time he shared with family and friends. 

John is survived by his seven children, John, Jim, Jeff, Joseph, Jerry, Jenni and Jay; eight grandchildren; and his younger brother, Frank, of Hampstead, New Hampshire. His family and those who knew him will remember the many experiences, conversations, and moments they shared with him over the years. 

A private burial was held at Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay. A celebration of John's life will be held next summer, with details to be announced at a later date.
