It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Boothbay peninsula residents are continually outdoing themselves, and their latest promotion, the Festival of Lights, is the latest example. When town and Chamber officials first encouraged both homeowners and businesses to light up for the holidays to put out a welcome mat for the thousands of visitors expected to view the Gardens Aglow lighting spectacular at the Community Gardens, we’re not sure what they expected. They were hoping for widespread participation and boy, did they ever get it! Just about everyone got in the act, and what a sight it is, as you enter Boothbay. The public Boothbay Common is a showplace and the individual homes and businesses all the way along Route 27 and into downtown Boothbay Harbor send a powerful message: The Christmas spirit is alive and well here.
Store owners, motels and restaurants are pleased with the newfound customers they’ve rarely had in November and December and it’s heartwarming to see so many folks on the sidewalks this time of the year. As for Gardens traffic, if you’ve traveled north or south on Route 27 between Boothbay and Route One, you know what vehicular traffic is like.
We’re certainly off to a great start this holiday season, and many other events are still to come.Santa arrives via boat on Saturday and there will be wagon rides, a craft fair and the beautiful lighted boat parade. The Opera House hosts its magical Festival of Trees at the Opera House Friday and Saturday, and the Historical Society will welcome residents and visitors alike Saturday to share the latest exhibit of our rich maritime history and check out the many gift ideas. Later this month, the North Pole Express will provide train rides at the Railway Village, the Opera House will host its annual Dough Ball and also its famous Gingerbread Spectacular, a Victorian Christmas will be celebrated in Wiscasset with train, sleigh and wagon tours, and a community pot luck and singalong will be celebrated at the Opera House.
If you’re normally a stay-at-homer, you need to get in your vehicle (or bum a ride with a neighbor) and make a little road tour, because we’ll wager a guess that it’s been a long time since you’ve seen our peninsula looking so spectacular. Plan to take in some of the upcoming activities, too. Many of them won’t cost you a single cent. We’ve just put another feather in our cap with this year’s Festival of Lights – words can’t begin to express what has been accomplished.
