An Irish Christmas at the Opera House Nov. 28
Irish musicians John Doyle and Mick McAuley join forces this holiday season, alongside Irish American musician and story-teller Cathie Ryan, as they bring their Christmas show to the historic Opera House in Boothbay Harbor, at 86 Townsend Ave., on Saturday, Nov. 28.
John Doyle and Mick McAuley’s nearly telepathic musical connection began with their time together as members of the ground-breaking Irish-American band Solas. For more than 35 years Cathie Ryan has been in the vanguard of Irish music. Against the backdrop of the beautifully decorated Opera House, these three luminaries of Irish music will celebrate Christmas and the winter holidays with an evening of traditional and contemporary songs, tunes and stories of the season.
John Doyle started his professional career at age 16, and went on to form the internationally acclaimed group Solas. John’s powerhouse rhythmic guitar helped take the folk and Celtic music worlds by storm. These days his solo career and prowess as a producer make him one of the busiest artists in all of traditional music. Grammy-nominated, he has performed at the White House, was music director for Joan Baez, guitarist for Mary Chapin Carpenter and has performed with many Opera House musicians including Eileen Ivers, Rodney Crowell, Jerry Douglas and Karan Casey.
While his music is firmly rooted in the Irish tradition, Mick McAuley has pushed the boundaries of that tradition to bring Irish music to a wider and more diverse audience around the world. A multi-instrumentalist, Mick plays accordion, melodeon, concertina, whistles, and guitar. For the past year he has been touring as accordionist for Sting in his Broadway production, "The Last Ship." Mick’s debut solo album, "An Ocean’s Breadth" was awarded Best Celtic Album of the Year by the Washington Post.
Cathie Ryan has built a loyal following around the globe. “There is nothing like a live show. I love the energy, the give and take, of being with an audience, and I love to have fun up there,’ she says. Liveireland.com has twice honored her as “Irish Female Vocalist of the Decade.” Her story-telling is renowned, and when not singing she leads tours of Ireland that focus on Irish music, folklore, myth and history.
The concert by these three Irish voices kicks off the holiday season of concerts and events at the Opera House.
