Idea on gateway
Dear Editor:
Historically, the gateway to Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor has been Route 27 as it approaches and bends around the Boothbay Common. While many are lamenting recent changes to this regional entrance, it’s important to focus on all the fine elements which remain and to plan for further enhancing this area.
Much is already in place. Obviously, the Common itself with its classic gazebo; the Boothbay Town Hall; the war memorial monument and cemetery; a historic church and manse; some attractive houses along the common; and a parcel of town owned land adjoining the Town Hall. One immediate focus should be to see this town owned parcel developed for a use or uses that enhance the gateway area. General development guidelines for the area open to creative interpretations (think Bet’s) should also be considered, looking to the long-term development of all parcels comprising the gateway.
As several people have noted, an ideal gateway should be welcoming and vibrant — supportive of routine commerce and ongoing social activities such as dining, special events, the arts, etc.
