Honor Flight veterans to speak at Southport Library on Nov. 11
Robert Eaton and Ron Orchard of Southport will speak at the Southport Memorial Library annual Veteran’s Day Observance on Sunday, Nov. 11, 1 p.m.
Eaton, a U. S. Army 14-year veteran serving in the German occupation during World War II and the Canal Zone during the Korean War, and Orchard, a Korean War veteran, are both recent participants in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., reserved for the oldest living veterans of either World War II or the Korean War. They will be accompanied by Jim Singer who will show slides of their trips.
The event, sponsored by the Southport Library Aides, will honor all those who serve, have served, or have died for our country.
Veterans and their families, as well as all local residents, are invited to gather in the library by 12:45 p.m. before the lowering of the flag at 1 p.m.
Southport veteran Jim Singer will be master of ceremonies. Tim Hanley, a Vietnam veteran, will lower the flag to half-staff. Donald Duncan will offer a prayer. Head Selectman Gerry Gamage will lead the group in singing God Bless America. Gamage will also read the names of those Southport veterans who have died in the past year. The Rev. Robert Dent will play taps.
Hanley will then raise the flag to end the ceremony and all are encouraged to stay for cider and donuts and gather in the Mystery Room to see Jim Singer’s latest slide presentation of veterans from the Boothbay Region.
The library will be decorated with art work from the Southport School students who are preparing special works devoted to Veterans Day’s and patriotic themes.
All are invited to attend. The Southport Library is located at Cape Newagen, at the tip of Southport Island. Cross the drawbridge and turn left on Route 238 and continue 3.8 miles to the library. For more information, call 633-2741.
