Hearty Roots grows its board with S. Carson Harvey

Native to Maine, S. Carson Harvey recently settled in the Midcoast, working as an attorney. She splits her time practicing real estate and corporate law, as well as child protection, serving as a Guardian ad Litem for youth in state custody. Carson studied Sociology and Political Science as an undergraduate at St. Lawrence University and received her law degree from Maine School of Law in the spring of 2020. Carson brings an abundance of experience to Hearty Roots, in youth mental health, youth programming, and education. She was the former program director at Midcoast Youth Center and served as a therapeutic support for children in foster care through Woodfords Family Services.

Carson’s commitment to public service runs deep and includes an AmeriCorps year of service in New York City, working with under-privileged youth as a tutor, mentor and coach at a middle school. “Having someone with Carson’s professional background join our team is an enormous gift for Hearty Roots and the kids we serve. Still, though—its Carson’s tireless personal commitment to youth, community, and active change that sets her apart, making our organization beyond grateful,” said Shannon M. Parker, coordinator of the capital campaign for Hearty Roots.

When not working, Carson enjoys visiting her family in Moosehead, volunteering at a horse farm, cooking, baking, as well as hiking, biking and exploring Maine’s natural landscape. “I’ve never joined a board more quickly,” Carson said. “In my experience in child protection and youth mental health, I’ve seen the gaps and failures of over-burdened systems. I’m a firm believer that meaningful programming run by thoughtful adults are the difference makers in children’s lives. The impact of one child feeling seen and heard ripples into their home, into their classrooms and into the community overall.” Hearty Roots is thrilled to welcome Carson and invites all readers to support children to “get off the grid and into their hearts.”
