Haitian receives $2,900 scholarship from East Boothbay church
As a member of the Hope Haitian Choir, Alex Antoine became acquainted with Boothbay eight years ago. In past years, the choir visited and performed at East Boothbay Methodist Church. But two years ago, choir members decided to remain in the U.S. following the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise.
Antoine and his fellow choir members sought temporary protection status to remain in the U.S. Antoine lived in East Boothbay staying with Pastor Tom Kerr and his wife Sarah. Antoine found part-time work before becoming a certified nursing assistant. He is now studying to become a registered nurse and East Boothbay Methodist Church is giving him a scholarship. On Sept. 10, the church presented Antoine with a $2,900 check.
“Thank you, I appreciate what you all have done for me,” Antoine told the congregation. Antoine has made an impression on the congregation with his work ethic and dedication to his family. “He’s been active with church and willing to help out others. He sends money back to Haiti to help his family, and we’re glad to help him out with his education,” said Tom Kerr.
Antoine earned college credits in Haiti and plans on finishing his undergraduate studies at York County Community College in Wells.
