Great community turnout at Wannawaf
Dear Editor:
This past Saturday, I put on my Boothbay Region Community Television hat and, along with fellow volunteer Sue Mello ventured to Wannawaf to capture the ninth annual Waffle Eating Contest. With the expert editing of BRCTV manager Jonne Trees this program is now playing on Channel 7.
This year’s contest beneficiaries were the Scott family, Nick, Mandy and baby Emma, who are working together on Mandy’s road to recovery from colon cancer.
During my years as a local resident, I have seen this community come together to support one of our own in their time of need. This event and all of those who gave their time and donations speaks loudly of why I feel blessed to call the Boothbay region my home.
Anya Arsneault, owner of Wannawaf, and manager Matt Frogues planned and coordinated this event letting their staff know it was “all hands on deck.” All showed up and donated their time to provide waffles and the fixings for the 28 contestants.
Many of our merchants and restaurant owners donated gift certificates for the silent auction. Colleen, a cancer survivor, gave the Scotts a handmade quilt made by a support group.
Staff and students from our Boothbay region schools showed up to participate in the contest, provide assistance and cheer on the contestants.
The winner of the 50/50, recent BRHS graduate Lynn Pawlowski, donated back her winnings, and Wes Bare, the winner of the event, donated half of his winnings to the Scotts.
Witnessing this tremendous support makes me feel fortunate to live in such a caring community.
