‘Go Get It,’ Lady Seahawks prep for Lobster Jam

Sixteen teams vie for tournament title

Summertime in Boothbay for your average teenager typically involves trolley rides, multiple trips to the Ice Cream Factory, the occasional afternoon at Barrett Park, and of course, balancing the fun stuff with one of your first summer jobs.

Members of the Boothbay Region High School Lady Seahawks basketball team partake in all these endeavors. They also meet twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday, for summer scrimmages, attend a weekend team camp at Colby College, and work together to host and play in their own 16-team basketball tournament, the fifth annual Lobster Jam.

Needless to say, the team has been pushing themselves to be anything but average. Twenty-three individuals have made a commitment to their team this summer. The blueprint is simple: Do what we can now to prepare ourselves to be champions next winter. This group wants to cut down nets at the end of their season. The new team motto says it all: “Go Get It.” The words are printed on the back of each summer shirt in gold ink. That is completely by design.

Also by design is the tough nature of the Lady Seahawks summer schedule. Boothbay, a school of around 200 kids, has already competed against the likes of Leavitt, Brunswick, Yarmouth and Edward Little. The team faced Westbrook, Biddeford, and Wells in a South Portland tournament earlier this summer. At the Maine Gold Rush team camp at Colby College, the girls played virtually non-stop for three days straight, competing in 10 contests against larger schools throughout the weekend.

On July 24 and 25, the team will face Foxcroft Academy, Camden Hills and Mt. Blue in Lobster Jam pool play. Routinely facing schools three times the size of their own is a challenge every time out. The girls are rising to this challenge, and the hope is that it pays big dividends come next season.

Come support the Lady Seahawks this weekend at the fifth annual Boothbay Lobster Jam. Their game times are as follows:

Friday, July 24: 6:30 p.m. vs. Foxcroft Academy at BRES

Saturday, July 25: 9 a.m. vs. Camden Hills at BRHS; 3:45 p.m. vs. Mt. Blue at BRHS

If the team wins its pool, they will advance to the “Final Four” rounds beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Other highlights of the event include the Skills Competition; individuals weave through a basketball obstacle course striving to complete the course with the fastest time. That event takes place on Saturday at noon in the BRHS gym. Fresh lobster rolls will also be served all weekend for just $5. Daily admission for the event is $3 for adults and $1 for students. All tourney proceeds go towards BRHS girls basketball.

The journey for the nets starts now! Come support the Lady Seahawks basketball team this weekend as they “Go Get It” at the Lobster Jam!
