Fish chowder suppers at St. Philip’s back by demand

Wed, 07/15/2015 - 10:30am

Smell that? It’s the haddock chowder steeping and readying for the first of two summer chowder suppers at St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset. Monday, July 20, will be the first dinner with seatings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A second supper is also scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17.

Many have called for the return of the staple summer dinner, so the people of St. Philip’s have bowed to demand. It’s exciting, too, to have Gail Grundy, past chowder chef, back in the driver’s seat after several years’ absence, ably assisted by daughter, Chris, to direct the usual crew of choppers, shredders, and mixers eager to make Monday’s dinner a satisfying one for all involved.

While the salad bar will be amended to tossed, three bean, and pasta salads, the bread basket will continue to be filled with an assortment of homemade corn and French breads. Drink choices will continue to be iced tea, lemonade, and water, as well as hot coffee. True to St. Phil’s delightful tradition, the dessert table will be resplendent in delicious homemade goodies supplied by St. Philip’s bakers.

What’s the price for this ample meal (chowder, breads, salads, drinks and desserts)? $10 per adult, and $5 per child under 12: a family-friendly deal. Hot dogs by request will be available for those family members not fond of or not able to eat chowder.

So, write it on the calendar and then call the church. Though reservations are not necessary, they would be appreciated for planning’s sake. Call St. Philip’s at 207-882-7184. Leave a name, number in the party, time of arrival, as well as a call-back number for verification.

Don’t hesitate. Set the date. Chowder awaits.
