Finding Houdini

On Friday, Jan. 27, my father (Steve Edwards) and I found ourselves approaching Boothbay Center on our drive home around 4:30 p.m. As we crested the hill toward the roundabout, I spotted a small brown speck moving around the circuitous route. As we get closer, I realized that it was a medium-sized dog moving towards us. I directed my dad to stop the car, I threw open my door and the dog hopped into my lap.

We pulled over by Bet’s Fish Fry and I called the numbers on his collar. As I flipped through the tags I found his name – “Houdini” – how ironic. Neither of the two numbers answered, so I called again and again, nothing. So we waited to see if we could spot anyone looking around.

A few minutes later we saw a small car moving very slowly around the roundabout and it looked like the woman driver was looking for something. Just as we spotted the car, one of the numbers I had called, called me back saying that it was their neighbors’ dog, and that they lived over two hours away. The small car then turned to come towards where we were parked and I got out to wave the car down. The woman got out of her car and I asked if she was looking for a dog. She said “Yes, his name is Houdini. Have you seen him?”

Just then my dad opened the door and Houdini jumped out towards his mom. Just like that Houdini was reunited with his mom.
