Family fun at Southport Central School

Over the course of a couple of hours July 11, about 100 people showed up for fun, friendly competition, and food at the annual Family Fun Day at Southport Central School.

Now in its fifth year, the event is organized by Medea Harris, Stephanie Guite and Jen Baker. Principal Lisa Clark served food from the grill and local businessman Scott Larson stepped out of a meeting across the street to help pound stakes for the bouncy house donated by Compass Rose.

On one side of the school’s playing field, carnival games and face-painting stations were set up, while over by the pond materials were provided for the ever-popular boatbuilding competition.

Events throughout the afternoon included a limbo competition, sack races, the water-balloon toss, egg relay race, three-legged race, and pie-eating contests.

In the boat race, only one competitor made it all the way across the pond on their vessel. Some looked as though they might make it but fell short, and a few fell apart almost as they entered the water, but all were met with applause and encouragement from onlookers.

Thanks to the generous support of the Southport Island Association, all the activities were free to participants. Funds raised from the sale of food and drink go towards the school’s annual fundraiser.

This year’s goal is to raise enough money to create a Gaga Ball pit in the schoolyard.
