Edgecomb Fire and Rescue responded to 22 calls in August, compared with 19 calls in July. August calls included four fires, three fire alarms, ten medical emergencies (MEs), and five motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). Year-to-date, we have responded to 167 calls, slightly fewer than 174 calls at the same time last year.

We participated in the Mid-Coast two-day training weekend on Aug. 14-15, sponsored by the Gavin Martin Foundation. This training event included a lecture and social event on Friday and a full day of hands-on training on Saturday, including forced entry operations and multiple vehicle extractions.

We also had a simulated fire training session on Aug. 19, responding to a “fire” at 36 Cochran Road with Engine 3, Squad 4, and Tanker 7 with full gear and apparatus. Upon arrival, our firefighters deployed hoses, connected them to the tanker, and were shooting water within two minutes.

Other training included our monthly “Truck Check” of all apparatus and equipment. We also conducted our annual day-long hose pressure testing and our ladder stress testing. Ongoing training is critical in maintaining our readiness to respond to any call.

Aug. 3, 8:42 p.m.: ME for a 48-year old female reporting chest pains. 

Aug. 4, 12:19 a.m.: Fire alarm at 45 Route One, Apt. B6, for a general fire alarm; 2:39 p.m. for an elderly female requiring lift assist. 

Aug. 5, 5:09 p.m.: Fire alarm at 198 Old County Road in woodshed. 

Aug. 8, 12:45 p.m.: ME for an 84-year-old male, stuck in chair, requesting a bariatric lift; 11:46 a.m.: Brush fire at 306 Eddy Road on the side of the road. 

Aug. 10, 9:38 a.m.: MVA at 573 Boothbay Road for a dump truck which had rolled over with occupant injured. This complex rollover required the closure of Route 27 and traffic diverted for approximately four hours while the vehicle was safely removed.

Aug. 11, 2:32 p.m.: ME for an 82-year-old female, fallen and unable to get up, requesting lift assist; 4:54 p.m.: ME for an 80-year-old male, shaking uncontrollably; 7:20 p.m.: Fire alarm at 135 Eddy Road for a commercial alarm in bedroom number 5.

Aug. 13, 5:37 a.m.: MVA at 27 Boothbay Road, car off road in ditch, property damage only: 8:34 p.m.: ME for an 89-year-old female, stuck in chair, requesting lift assist.

Aug. 14, 7:06 a.m.: ME for a 66-year-old female, with swollen ankles and acting incoherently; 3:01 p.m.: MVA at 48 Route One for 2-vehicle accident, one car rear-ended. 

Aug. 15, 11:28 p.m.: MVA at 804 River Road, single-vehicle versus power poll, four occupants with personal injuries.

Aug. 16, 7:32 p.m.: Mutual aid for a fire at 243 Bradford Road in Wiscasset, tanker and Engine 3 responded to scene. 

Aug. 20, 12:15 p.m.: Fire alarm at 45 Route One, Apt. C3 for a residential smoke alarm. 

Aug. 21, 8:47 a.m.: ME for an 87-year-old male, fallen and requesting a lift assist. 

Aug. 24: 5:52 a.m.: MVA at intersection of Boothbay Road and River Road, car versus deer, property damage only. 

Aug. 27: 7:38 p.m.: ME for a 98-year-old female, having a possible stroke; 10:05 p.m.: ME for an 87-year-old male, fallen and requesting a lift assist. 

Aug. 28: 2:05 a.m.: ME for a 67-year-old male, having abdominal pains. 

Aug. 31: 9:55 a.m.: Fire-Other at 72 Creek Lane, near Parsons Point Road, for a smoking tree on wires. 

Annual Fish Fry Nov. 7

Please save the date Nov. 7 for the EFD Auxiliary’s annual fish fry. This community event features fried fish or fried chicken tenders with all the trimmings and is a meaningful way to honor veterans on Veterans Day. The fish fry is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and all proceeds are used to supplement our budget, which helps reduce the town’s taxes.

Weekly department meetings 

The department meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the fire station. Anyone interested in learning more about the department is welcome to attend. We are always looking for more volunteers—no experience necessary!
