Edgecomb Column: Recuperating
For the last two weeks, you have had no news from Edgecomb. No, alas, I have not been on a cruise of the Mediterranean. I have been under medical care for a couple of ailments, including sciatica. I will spare you the details because they are boring. So I am as eager as you are to find out what has happened on the home front.
But first, I want to sing the praises of my neighbors and relatives: The combined attentions from Frank Perkins, Evelin Brown and Susie Stephenson were outstanding! Our niece Jennifer Milliken and our daughter Bisi Yee as well as the above have provided comfort and companionship beyond belief. Bruce and I are truly grateful.
And it is always comforting to find Tom Trowbridge the first responder. I am also grateful, of course, to the various teams of ambulance staff, hospital and medical staff at St. Andrews, Miles, and Mid-Coast hospitals.
But, to get caught up on Edgecomb doings, that must have been quite an experience for the kids, when the Edgecomb Eddy School bus got clobbered by the power pole while under tow. Thank you, Southport Central, for the loaner school bus.
The big news item is the resolution of the Lallis property dilemma, which has hovered over the town for I don’t know how long, but it was tantalizingly static during my time on the board of selectmen. Apparently a key piece of red tape was omitted or done wrong at the time of foreclosure, so the property was caught up in both state and federal liens. During my two terms we were able to have the federal liens forgiven, but the state just kept on extending their liens another 10 years at a time. So I salute whoever, whether individual or collective, for disentangling the knot.
As everyone knows, the Lallis tract has been the final link in the River-Link Trail, so now all the deer, woodcocks, bears, rabbits have a superhighway along Mt. Hunger Ridge between the Zak Preserve, the Schmid Preserve and the Dodge Point Preserve. (I am in favor of cracking a bottle of champagne once we have all hiked the entire trail, but that’s just me.)
The town’s roadwork bond is entering its second year, with Old County and Cochran Roads the focus. It seems to me that from the corner of my eye, I learned that MDOT plans to fix River Road next summer. This is not fact, but hopeful rumor, spread by me. The town is considering long-range maintenance and repair strategies for both road work and snow removal.
I am also delighted to learn that the Edgecomb Historical Society has been chosen to receive a Spirit of America Award! Which reminds me that the first EHS meeting of the fall months will be Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Edgecomb Community Church. Come join us and enjoy our major news item!
Flowers of the Forest: Let us salute the passing of Jane Najim, not an Edgecomb resident, but at one time the owner of the late lamented Bagel Express.
Commiserations to Misty Brown, who had a car vs. deer encounter. Commiserations also to the deer.
Anyone desiring a quiet companion to make the winter less bleak, you have until Oct. 1 to acquire an adult rescue cat from the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. Adoption fees are being waived for approximately 40 cats who have come to the shelter over the summer. Adult cats are easier to take care of, since usually they are self-sufficient. Best yet, they can reduce your house mouse and squirrel populations in short order. Give LCAS a ring at 207-882-9677 for details, or visit their website, www.lcasmaine.org, or shucks, why not just wander over to Atlantic Avenue and talk with personnel, both human and feline, face to face!
A reminder to all Edgecombites: As per vote at town meeting, our property taxes are due one month earlier than years past, hence Oct. 31, no longer Nov. 31. Selectman Mike Smith will be posting reminder notices in conspicuous locations throughout town as the time approaches.
Don’t forget the Edgecomb Eddy Green First Friday Coffee, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Oct. 2.
Watching an almost perfect September flow by from my bed of pain at 234 River Road, 207-633-2978, and jocam@tidewater.net.
