Don't miss the silent film 'The Black Pirate'
Audiences have one final opportunity to step back in time and experience cinema as it was a century ago with the final film in Lincoln Theater’s silent film series, “The Black Pirate.” Join live old-time piano player Doug Protsik for this epic swashbuckler!
Presented as part of the theater’s 150th anniversary celebration, this special event marks the finale of a three-film silent movie series highlighting the artistry and innovation of early filmmaking. Each film in the series has recognized a different genre (comedy, horror, and now swashbuckler) and been paired with live piano accompaniment by composer Doug Protsik, offering audiences a rare chance to experience silent cinema as it was originally intended.
Released in 1926, and starring Douglas Fairbanks at the height of his swashbuckling fame, “The Black Pirate” delivers high-seas adventure, daring stunts, and a tale of vengeance and honor. The story follows a young nobleman who survives a brutal pirate attack that claims his father’s life. Swearing revenge, he infiltrates the very band of pirates responsible, adopting the identity of the “Black Pirate.” Through courage and cunning, he rises among their ranks—though his mission becomes more complicated when he encounters a princess, played by Billie Dove, in need of protection. With its striking early use of two-color Technicolor and Fairbanks’ iconic athleticism, “The Black Pirate” remains a landmark of the silent film era.
Director of Maine Traditional Music Association and Director of Maine Fiddle Camp, Protsik returns as piano accompanist. Doug has scored and performed for countless showings throughout Maine and has been commissioned and produced 12 new old-time piano scores for silent movie restoration projects that were broadcast on Turner Classic Movies. Doug’s scores attempt to capture the unique flavor with the music as it embellishes the action on screen, in an original and authentic way. He also has established a fun aspect to the performances by including “musical jokes” in his scores, challenging the audience to recognize them.
“The Black Pirate” plays for one screening only Sunday, April 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets are priced at $15 for adults, $13 for Lincoln Theater members, and $5 for youth ages 18 and under. Lincoln Theater is located at 2 Theater St. in downtown Damariscotta.
