Dear Editor:

By now, many of your readers, residents and visitors alike will have noticed the absence of the American flags painting the breeze from our region's phone poles. The reason for this absence is easily explained. When the flags were taken in this past fall I had hoped we would get one more season out of them. This turned out not to be the case though and when I started getting ready for this spring I found the deterioration to be extensive.

As a result of this, “Display the Colors” is launching a new fundraising drive, this time with a partner. I am pleased to announce that the Charles E. Sherman Jr. Post #36 of the American Legion has agreed to help with this effort and from now on all funds will go through the post. Martin Page and I will still be doing the work of maintaining the flags with any help that the members of the post can give us.

Anyone who enjoys seeing our nation’s symbol, a symbol of freedom around the world, flying throughout the region can donate to this program. Please send donations, payable to Charles E. Sherman Post #36/Flags, to P.O. Box 874, Boothbay Harbor ME 04538.
