Democrats discuss legislative session
All Lincoln County Democrats and supporters are invited to attend the next meeting of the Lincoln County's Democratic Committee on Thursday, July 25. Jon Hillier, 2013 Field Director of the Maine Democratic Party will join Senator Chris Johnson and representatives Bruce MacDonald, Mick Devin and Tim Marks in reviewing the legislative session that just ended.
This session featured a historic number of vetoes by Governor Paul LePage. Although democrats and republicans came together to avoid a government shutdown and pass a budget over the objections of the governor, most of his vetoes of bills were sustained by republicans even though the bills had been passed in the legislature with bipartisan support. The most important of these was the governor's veto of the extension of Medicaid to 70,000 Maine citizens at virtually no cost to Maine taxpayers.
Speakers will address how to move ahead in the next legislative session on Medicaid extension and other initiatives in the face of unrelenting use of the veto pen.
The meeting will take place in the 911 Communications Center behind the Lincoln County Court House in Wiscasset. A 30-minute social gathering begins at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting gets under way at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be available.
