In defense of gun ownership
Dear Editor:
I buy our local paper every week to see what is happening in our small town. Winter in Maine is very boring.
I don’t know Fred Nehring but it seems to me that he is beating a dead horse to death, as the old saying goes. I think at this point his letters to the editor should be focusing on cocaine, heroin, prescription drugs, etc. I think there are just as many deaths — and people committing suicide.
Another big problem happening in Maine is all the men and women assaulting toddlers, plus men assaulting young teens and committing gross sexual acts on them. This needs to be stopped.
Also, another big problem I have, and wish I had the means to do something about it, is people hurting animals, or just dumping them off somewhere.
Fred, that gun is not being fired unless someone picks it up. You say in your letter bad people shouldn't have guns. How are you going to stop them from buying guns illegally?
Again, we need more education on what is right and wrong. I took the NRA training and I learned a lot. It's a great course and includes large book to tell you right from wrong.
I have been around guns all of my life. I do have a permit to carry my gun. What if someone tries to invade your house? I want to know I have some means to protect myself.
What about our men and women in the military? Do you want their guns taken away? It's because of those men and women that you and everyone else has their “freedom.” Freedom isn't free by a long shot.
I don't want my Second Amendment rights to be infringed on, nor do I want my freedom of speech to be taken away.
Fred, you are not going to stop bad guys from buying guns illegally any more than you are going to stop the selling of drugs.
Like Linc Sample's sign says, the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
