Dan Trask scores emotional victory at Wiscasset Speedway
Once again, Wiscasset Speedway proved the doubters wrong and beat the weather on Saturday evening, hosting a successful Group 2 program that was presented by the Maine ARMY National Guard.
The racing action kicked off with the 35-lap Pepsi Spotlight feature for the Portland Glass Strictly Streets. Ethan Dinsmore took off with the early lead, but it was utter chaos behind him with 2 and 3-wide battles throughout the entire field. After leading the entire race, Dinsmore came to a sudden slow on the track due to a transmission failure on lap 14, resulting in a premature exit.
Dale Lawrence powered to the lead on the restart and maintained command throughout multiple cautions that followed. "Cowboy" Dan Trask entered the picture just past halfway, climbing to second after starting back in 17th. A late-race caution brought the field back together with just 8 laps to go. This brought opportunity to Trask, who powered to the lead with just 5 laps remaining. As Trask sailed into the victory, Landon Tapley and Chris Burgess (who gained 20 positions) followed in succession, completing the top 3. After scoring his first victory in 7 years, an emotional Trask climbed out of the car and was joined by family and friends. He dedicated his win to his late friend and Wiscasset Speedway Hall of Famer Mike Kimball, who is dearly missed and remembered by many.
After scoring his second consecutive heat win, Hayden Carver jumped out to a commanding early lead in the 25-lap feature for the Dale's Cash Fuel Roadrunners. Gavin Gerow and Karigan Glasier filed in behind him, with Gerow tracking down Carver in the laps that followed. Gerow was all over his back bumper at halfway, quickly overtaking the top spot. Gavin Gerow maintained his command as the laps wound down, scoring his second victory of the season. Hayden Carver (1st career top 3) and Karigan Glasier completed the podium.
Shane Clark hustled into the early lead in the 40-lap feature for the Wood Pellet Warehouse Late Models. "Sasquatch" Ben Nile was also on the move early, diving under Dave Getchell for second. Ethan Dinsmore's struggles continued as he took a spin on lap 11, coming to a stop on the front stretch. Shane Clark and Ben Nile squared up on the restart, with Clark holding the upper hand. A pile-up at the tail of the field collected Colton Chubbuck, Pat Murphy and Steve Barker, resulting in another caution. Shane Clark maintained his command on the restart and held onto it, securing the victory. Ben Nile and Frank Moulton followed, rounding out the top 3.
The night concluded with a 30-lap feature for the Creative Cleanouts by Josh Sport Modifieds. Alec Brown pulled to the early lead as the field scattered behind him following a chaotic initial start. Kyle Hewins powered to second on lap 4 as Adam Chadbourne trailed him closely. Chadbourne was all over Hewins' back bumper on lap 17, waiting for the opportunity to strike. The two drivers exchanged love taps as the laps ticked away and Chadbourne made one final push with just 4 laps to go, pulling to Hewins' outside door. Hewins held him off, securing second as Alec Brown scored his second victory of the season.
With nearly 60 competitors on site among four action-packed divisions, Saturday was a great night at the race track. Team Wiscasset will keep it rolling as they host one of their biggest races of the season, the BIW Shipbuilder 100, on Saturday, June 13.
The green flag flies at 5 p.m. and as always, grandstand admission is just $5 for adults and free for kids 6 and under.
