Concerned about situation in Syria
Dear Editor:
I am very concerned about the situation in Syria. I realize that most people do not support involvement. I do. I think it is vital at this time to support President Barack Obama for the following reasons.
First, we have had a ban on the use of chemical weapons for nearly 100 years, since World War I. Even during World War II, Germany and Japan refused to use them on the battlefield. This could change to the detriment of all.
Second, what is happening to innocent people in Syria is horrible. It reminds me of Rwanda and we should have stopped that, too.
Third, and most important, if we do not take a stand, what kind of message does this send to the rest of the world? Our enemies will be emboldened to defy us and use whatever weapons they possess, and our friends will no longer trust us to keep our word.
If you believe as I do, or if you don’t, call our people in Washington, D.C. Here are their numbers:
Sen. Angus King, 207-622-8292 or 1-202-224-5344; Rep. Chellie Pingree, 207-774-5019 or1-202-225-6116; Rep. Mike Michaud, 207-942-6935 or 1-202-225-6306; Sen. Susan Collins, 1-202-224-2523 or 1-800-622-8414.
