Come to CTL's open house April 12
Dear Editor:
Now is the time parents in Midcoast Maine are thinking about an elementary and middle school for their children for 2026 and beyond. As a parent, grandparent, and as a former teacher and principal, I want to recommend an internationally recognized educational treasure, the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Located in Edgecomb, Maine and established in 1990, it is celebrating its 35th year of providing a pre-k through grade 8 rigorous, experiential, child centered education.
At a time when education at all levels is in turmoil, CTL’s faculty meet their students in a collaborative search for knowledge and proficiency. Founded by the recipient of the first Varkey Global Teacher’s Prize, Nancie Atwell, CTL annually hosts interns from public and private schools across the country who seek professional development provided by CTL’s faculty and administration. Our students benefit as well from the ongoing dialogue about what is best practice in teaching and learning.
I am the proud grandfather of a student who will graduate from 8th grade this year having spent all of her school years at CTL. I also have had the privilege of serving on the CTL Board and seeing how thoughtfully the school’s leadership and faculty, with the support of parents, continue to assess and implement dynamic programs and practices. The Head of the School, Katy Inman, has a remarkable connection with all individuals in the school community and is open and receptive to the productive dialogue that informs all aspects of the school day.
My perspective is informed by 37 years as head of private/independent schools in New York, Oklahoma, Washington, DC, and Rhode Island with pre-k to grade 12 enrollments as large as 1200. I can say without hesitation that the education provided at CTL is at the same level of quality as that of America’s finest elementary schools.
CTL is hosting an Open House for prospective students and parents Sunday, April 12, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at its Edgecomb campus, 119 Cross Point Road. It is an opportunity to meet the faculty and leadership of a remarkable school which continues to demonstrate a commitment to excellence and individual student growth. Within its walls, CTL offers an educational model for all ages. It is worth a visit.
