Coastal Senior College Course explores aviation and spaceflight
Registration is now open for winter term courses at Coastal Senior College, serving midcoast Maine from Wiscasset to Camden. Classes begin the week of Jan. 13. Find more information about CSC membership and registration for classes at coastalseniorcollege.org.
“‘Paper Moon’ - The Story of Aviation and Spaceflight in Manuscripts” will be taught in person at Schooner Cove in Damariscotta. How did mankind learn to fly, and, eventually, to fly into space? This class will include explorations of the following: early aeronautics, early rockets, the Vostok and Mercury programs, Apollos 1 through 17, and space tourism, including references to manuscripts, correspondence and some audio/visuals from the instructor’s own original memorabilia and historic manuscript collection. Instructor Derek Webber says this class has “Something for historians, some technical matters, some human interest, and even something for dreamers.”
Webber is a former space engineer and negotiated multi-million-dollar satellite communications contracts before focussing on marketing and regulatory aspects of the space tourism and lunar commerce sectors of space developments both in the UK and the US.
Class discussions in Coastal Senior College courses offer an opportunity to learn and connect with other students who are primarily 50 and older.
Two other classes in the winter courses series will be offered in person in Damariscotta and Newcastle. Eight other classes will be offered online.
