Clarke begins last first day in education at Southport

Principal Lisa Clarke is looking forward to making the 2023-24 school year “a great year,” as it is her last in education. Clarke is retiring at year’s end, but she is excited about returning to the classroom this fall. Besides serving as Southport Central School’s principal, she teaches second grade. “I have an awesome staff. I love being around the ‘kiddos,’ and I love what I do.”
This year, SCS has 19 students attending kindergarten through grade six. Second grader Aiden Nunan is one of Clarke’s classroom students. When asked what he was most excited about for the new school year, he shrugged and said, “I barely know what’s going to happen today.”
Counselor Meredith Fowlie has worked in education for 10 years. Last year, she introduced a new French language course. She taught one class a week to all students. Fowlie is excited about resuming her French classes this fall. “It went amazing last year. The kids really loved it,” she said.
For kindergartener Jeremiah Carroll, this is his first year at SCS. But the new kid is bringing an old family tradition to school. “My mother brought a family tradition from Switzerland where you bring gifts for your classmates on the first day of school,” said Finn Carroll, Jeremiah’s father.
